What things should I consider before
bringing a new cat or kitten into my home?

Did you know that cats can live to be over 20? That is a long time to spend with your new best friend. We suggest thinking about where your kitty would go if something happened to you or what would you do if you had to move. Food, litter and basic care for your cats typically costs about $600 - $1,000 a year. This can increase if your cat gets sick and needs additional care or emergency care. If you are concerned about emergency costs, you might want to consider pet insurance. Our cats and kittens come with 30 days free of insurance after adoption. Visit www.24petwatch.com/petinsurance/cat-insurance.asp to learn more about pet insurance.

We do not allow our cats or kittens to be declawed. For more information on this and alternatives to declawing, please visit www.declaw.org/. If you purchase Soft Paws (http://www.softpaws.com/) FCCR will place them on your adopted cat for free. If you have made up your mind on getting a declawed cat, we do occasionally get cats that are already declawed. Call the shelter for more information on these cats.

FCCR adopts our cats as indoor only cats. You can take your adopted kitty outside if you are present and we encourage adopters to consider harness training their cats or building cat enclosures. If you are looking for a barn cat please call the shelter as we sometimes come across cats who are better suited as "barn cats".

It is your responsibility to follow local laws on animal ownership. This includes licensing and vaccinating your animal. Please visit your local county's animal control website for more information.

What is your adoption process?

The first step to adopting a cat or kitten from the Fort Collins Cat Rescue is to fill out an adoption questionnaire. You can do this online or in the shelter.
  • Online form
  • Word document
  • PDF document
The next step is to pick out a kitty! Check out Petfinder for pictures and short descriptions of adoptable cats or come into the shelter to see them in person.

Once you are ready to adopt you will fill out an adoption contract. If you want to read it before adopting, check it out here:

*Please note that we will make a copy of the adopters' State ID card or passport at the time of adoption

Is there anything else I should know?

Our staff will call you one week after you adopt your new cat or kitten to see how everything is going. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please call the shelter at 970-484-8516. There will also be an e-mail survey 2 - 3 months after adopting following up on your new life together.

Please remember that the Fort Collins Cat Rescue Staff and volunteers are here for you and your new cat / kitten. If something does not work out or seems off, we are here to help you.

We are the safety net for your cat or kitten and will take your kitty back into the shelter if something unavoidable happens and you must give up you friend. Do not feel afraid or embarrassed to call, we want to help you and your kitty.

Adoption Questionnaire

Everyone who wants to adopt a cat must fill out an Adoption Questionnaire. This questionnaire has information about you and your history with other animals.  It also has a place to let us know if you rent or own your own house.  If you are renting we recommend that you download the questionnaire and get your landlord to sign it before you come to the shelter.  After you submit your adoption questionnaire there may be a 24 hour waiting period before you can take a kitty home - especially if we have to contact a landlord.  If you find a kitty that you want to adopt you may put it on hold, otherwise you can submit your questionnaire, be approved, then pick a kitty.

If you'd like to email a questionnaire to the shelter you can download the doc version and send it in.  That way you can be approved even before you visit!

Please take the time to read through our adoption contract before considering an adoption.  We do require that our kitties not be declawed.  This is for the safety and well-being of the cat.  if you have any questions about declawing please click here. We also require that all adopted kitties be indoor cats (they may go outside if highly supervised).  This is again for their safety - And it's the law in Fort Collins.  If you have questions as to why we have these requirements we will be glad to talk with you about them.

The kitties hope to see you soon!
