Fostering FELV

Kitties that test positive for Feline Leukemia cannot live in the shelter or in a home where they will interact with cats that are negative for Feline Leukemia. People, dogs and other species are not able to get Feline Leukemia as it is a species specific disease.

When a cat enters a permanent foster home they are no longer available for adoption. We will give you food, litter and medical care for the kitty. The kitty will live with you until it is time for him or her to pass. This is an unknown time frame as they can generally live 1 – 3 years after diagnosis. If at any time you would like to officially adopt your Feline Leukemia foster kitty, we will waive all adoption fees.

The reason why we offer this program is that we feel these kitties deserve a chance at a normal, loving life. You are their hero.

  • Time commitment to perform in-home care: All fosters will need to have their litter box and living area clean daily. They will also need food 1 - 3 times a day. It is unrealistic to expect any youth to perform these activities, therefore an adult will need to agree to and perform in-home care.
  • Time commitment for transportation: We will arrange a time for you to pick up a cat for fostering. Once in your home, foster animals will need to come back to the shelter for routine check-ups, surgery to be spayed or neutered and examinations during signs of illness.
  • Commitment to keeping the kitty in your home for their life: We do not know how long a Feline Leukemia positive cat will live. They generally live 1 – 3 years after diagnosis.
  • Own FeLV + cats or no FeLV - cats: Due to the nature of this disease we will not place any feline leukemia positive cats into a home with negative cats, even if the negative cats are vaccinated. No vaccine is 100%!
  • A phone that we will be able to contact you on: Sometimes we have emergencies or last minute changes to plans. We need to be able to contact you at a number that you check often.
  • Live in Larimer or Weld County: All foster homes need to reside in Larimer or Weld County to foster for us. This is due to transportation that is required and the need to get sick animals to us as soon as possible. If you live outside of Larimer or Weld County, please look for a shelter or recue group in your area that need foster homes.
