Feral Cat Services
Northern Colorado Friends of Ferals
The NCFF Program through the Fort Collins Cat Rescue was started in February of 2009 in an attempt to help feral cat colony caretakers get their cats neutered. There are a large number of kindhearted people in Larimer County who feed feral cats. Some manage to trap them and have them spayed or neutered, but many find it difficult, don't have traps, the trapping know-how, or the funds available to pay for the surgery. The NCFF group is comprised entirely of generous volunteer trappers, veterinarians and clinic assistants who give their time once a month to this program. Cats are trapped, transported to the clinic for their surgery, held overnight for observation and returned to their colonies the following day. This type of program is gaining popularity nationally as the most efficient and most humane way of decreasing colony numbers and stopping the euthanasia of these cats at shelters. Ferals are not candidates for adoption and hence, nearly 100% of them are euthanized when they go to shelters.
As of December 13th 2009, we will have completed 10 TNR (Trap-Neuter-Release) weekends and have altered 330 cats. It is hoped that we can increase the scope of this program with a mobile spay/neuter vehicle in the near future. We are in the process of trying to find a donated RV that we can have retrofitted for surgeries. (So…spread the word!)
Thanks to all the wonderful volunteers and donors for a great TNR year! You are making a difference!
