How do I relinquish a cat?
The Fort Collins Cat Rescue is a NO KILL shelter.
This is great news for the cats that come to us, but our space is limited. So it also means that
we have to turn cats away when we are full. Here is some info
to consider when FCCR as the place
to relinquish ownership of your cat:
- DO NOT ABANDON YOUR
ANIMALS ON OUR DOORSTEP! This is extremely dangerous for
the animals who may get caught in inclement weather,
escape their containers and roam very busy streets, or
even worse be picked up by someone not connected with
the shelter.
- Call the shelter first! - If you show up
unexpectedly with a cat, we will probably have to turn you away. For every adult cat that
is adopted into a home, we can take in one more cat. There are months where we have many
adult cats adopted, and there are months where we have very few adult cats adopted.
Our office phone number is 970-484-8516.
- Consider using our
"Other Animals in Need"
services or Craigslist to help place your cat while
it is still living at home. If you need to
relinquish your own cat, the best thing to do is try to find a new home using our on-line assistance.
This gives your cat some visibility to those searching for a new pet.
For kitties who already have a home you should
consider shelter relinquishment a last resort. We say this because there are so many kitties
currently living on the streets that are in imminent danger and need our help the most.
Remember we are a cat rescue!
- Ask about our waiting list - We do maintain a short waiting
list of cats that need help quickly. We still judge cases on an individual basis, and don't simply follow a first
come first serve basis.

I found a stray cat. How do I
surrender it?
- File a found report with your local Humane Society. Somebody could very well be missing their beloved pet. Larimer Humane: 970-226-3647, Weld County Humane: 970-506-9550 If you can take care of the kitty for a few days to see if it is claimed, that is great! If not:
