Trap, Neuter & Release (TNR)
TNR is the big buzzword in the
world of feral cats. Cats from feral colonies
are trapped, brought to a clinic or shelter, spayed/neutered,
given vaccinations (usually rabies) and returned to
their colony.
Why are they
returned? Adult feral cats do not make good
pets and in areas without TNR programs they are
usually euthanized when brought to a shelter.
Also, simply removing an animal from the population
doesn't accomplish much. Since cats are
territorial, each cat in a colony holds an area.
If that cat is removed permanently another cat
moves in. However, if the cat is brought back
to the colony without the ability to breed, the
population growth of that colony is slowed.
Perform TNR on enough animals in the colony and the
population growth nears zero.
Fort Collins
Spay/Neuter actively supports TNR. Feral cats
may be brought to the clinic, where they will be
spayed/neutered, given a rabies vaccination and then
returned to the person who brought them.
During February all feral cats will be cared for for
FREE. Most months the cost for feral care is
$10.
If you know of
feral cats that would benefit from this program
please contact the clinic to learn how you can help.
If you would like
to make a serious difference in the feral cat
population, one way you can help is to make a
donation to the clinic to be used for the TNR
program. Obviously there is costs involved in
doing these surgeries and the vaccinations and it it
the kindness of people like you that make these
programs possible. Please contact the clinic
if this is something you'd like to help with.
